What South Africa Can Learn from Australia’s Bold Golf Strategy

Table of Contents

As any proud South African will tell you, it’s not easy admitting the Australians have done something worth copying — especially in sport. But when the evidence is this clear, intellectual honesty has to win out.

Australia’s golf industry has just unveiled one of the most ambitious growth strategies in the sport’s history: Big Swings 2026–2030. Built on more than 12,000 survey responses and 80-plus stakeholder interviews, the strategy commits to connecting one million new golfers to the game by 2030. It rests on three pillars: Evolve (transforming over 1,800 courses into flexible, experience-led venues), Belong (actively welcoming women, families, and underrepresented communities), and Connect (creating lifelong pathways into the game). It is a serious, coordinated national effort, and South Africa’s golf industry should be paying close attention.

The Paradox at the Heart of South African Golf

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: South Africa already possesses some of the greatest golf experiences on the planet. The courses are complete, immersive journeys. Pair them with the finest safari lodges on earth, and you have a destination that no other country can genuinely replicate. Yet the industry lacks the kind of unified national strategy needed to tell that story at scale, grow domestic participation meaningfully, and convert world-class product into world-class tourism numbers.

Product alone doesn’t build an industry. Australia’s Big Swings strategy is a masterclass in coordinated ambition — investing in facilities from the ground up, broadening the game’s appeal, and using technology to keep golfers engaged for life.

The commercial context makes this even more urgent. Global golf tourism is projected to reach $62 billion by 2034, up from $28 billion today. U.S. participation just hit its highest point since 2008. Two-thirds of core golfers are actively planning international golf trips, and they’re increasingly looking beyond Scotland and Ireland for their next bucket-list destination.

South Africa is ideally placed to capture that demand. A rand-dollar exchange rate that makes luxury genuinely accessible. Safari and wine alongside world-class fairways. Experiences that exist nowhere else on earth. The lesson from Australia isn’t abstract inspiration — it’s a practical blueprint. Invest in the game domestically, raise the quality consistently, tell the story boldly, and the international travelers will follow.

It’s not easy to tip your hat to the Aussies. But when they’re right, they’re right. Go Bokke.
